Class 5 – Truck Licence

This course is designed for individuals who hold a Class 5 Learner licence (5L) and are looking to advance to a full Class 5 licence, allowing them to legally operate heavy combination vehicles with a gross laden weight (GLW) exceeding 25,000 kg

Class 5- 1.5 day course

$1320+ Gst

You must hold unit standard 24089 Logbook and Fatigue (current) to qualify for the 1.5 day option.

Additional practical training or assessment beyond the course plan is charged at $235 + GST per hour

 

  • Truck & Trailer reversing training: 5–7 hours – $700 + GST
  • This course is designed to support learners in gaining their Class 5 Full Truck Licence, allowing them to legally operate heavy combination vehicles with a gross laden weight (GLW) exceeding 25,000 kg.

    By combining classroom-based learning with practical on-road training, the course prepares participants to meet the competency standards set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). It ensures drivers develop the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence required to operate Class 5 vehicles safely and effectively.

  • Hold a current Class 5 Learners licence.
  • Candidates who have completed Unit Standard 24089 within the last 12 months as part of another NZTA-approved driver licencing course is eligible to be exempt from re-completing the unit standard, however must present a copy of the certificate showing evidence of completion for driver licencing purposes (NZTA class 2 or 4 Certificate).
  • Candidates who have completed Unit Standard 24089 more than 12 months prior to course enrolment must complete the Logbook scenario (error-free, unaided  and in 1 attempt) to be exempt. If the logbook scenario is not successfully completed, candidates will be required to re-complete Unit Standard 24089 as part of this course.

1.5 day
 Day 1 - Unit Standard 17577 - Operate a combination vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 5 driver licence

  • Describe night driving hazards associated with driving a combination vehicle and describe measures to reduce the associated risks
  • Describe requirements relating to safe loading of a combination vehicle and driving techniques that minimisw the adverse effects of high centre of gravity


Following day - Practical Training AND Assessment Session

  •  Connect a trailer to the prime mover securely
  • Carry out pre-use walk around inspection of a combination vehicle
  • Drive a combination vehicle efficiently in different traffic and road conditions
  • Manoeuvre a combination vehicle in reverse
  • Park, shutdown, and secure seperately the trailer and prime mover of a combination vehicle.
  • Comple Driver logbook entries

In-Classroom Theory Course Closed Book Assessment & In-Vehicle Practical Training and Assessment.

Unit Standard 17577 (Level 4, credits 7) - Operate a combination vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 5 driver licence.

$1320 Plus Gst

If unit standard 24089 is required to complete as part of this course , Additional $ 390 plus gst will be charged .-1 day Course.

WorkTime  and log book Course Unit Standard 24089

Upon successful completion of all learning outcomes, including both the theory and practical components of the course, you will be issued an NZTA driver licensing certificate for a Class 5 Full Licence.You will need to present this certificate to your nearest NZTA-approved driver licensing agency (such as AA or VTNZ) to upgrade your licence to a Full Class 5 Licence, with no further tests required.Once you have received your Class 5 Full Licence, you are permitted to operate Class 5 heavy combination vehicles independently.All Unit Standards completed during this course will be credited to your NZQA Record of Learning within 90 days of the assessment date.
