Class 4 – Heavy Rigid Truck Licence

A Class 4 licence in New Zealand allows drivers to legally operate heavy rigid vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 18,000 kg. This licence is essential for driving large trucks used in construction, freight transport, waste management, civil works, and infrastructure projects.

It is designed for experienced drivers who want to progress into higher-responsibility roles and operate larger commercial vehicles. A Class 4 licence also improves career stability, long-term growth, and earning potential within New Zealand’s transport and logistics industry.

Class 4 – 1.5 DAY Course

$980+Gst

  • You must hold unit standard 24089 Logbook and Fatigue (current) to qualify for the 1.5 day option
  • Additional practical training or assessment beyond the selected course plan is charged at $195 + GST per hour.

The purpose of this course is to help candidates obtain their Class 4 Full Truck Licence, enabling them to legally drive heavy rigid vehicles with a gross Laden weight (GLW) over 18,000kg and up to 25,000kg.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical on-road training, this course prepares learners to meet the competency requirements set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), ensuring they are eqquiped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate class 4 vehicles safely, competently, and confidently.

 

The Class 4 Heavy Rigid Truck Course is designed for drivers who want to obtain their Full Class 4 Licence, allowing them to legally operate heavy rigid vehicles over 18,000kg on New Zealand roads.
This course combines NZTA-aligned classroom theory with practical, on-road driving training and assessment, ensuring learners develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to safely operate Class 4 vehicles.

  • Hold a Current Class 4 Learners licence.
  • Candidates who have completed Unit Standard 24089 within the last 12 months as part of another NZTA-approved driver licencing course is eligible to be exempt from re-completing the unit standard, however must present a copy of the certificate showing evidence of completion for driver licencing purposes (NZTA class 2 Certificate).
  • Candidates who have completed Unit Standard 24089 more than 12 months prior to course enrolment must complete the Logbook scenario (error-free, unaided  and in 1 attempt) to be exempt. If the logbook scenario is not successfully completed, candidates will be required to re-complete Unit Standard 24089 as part of this course.
1.5 day
Day 1
 - Unit Standard 17576 - Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 4 driver licence.
  • Identify and explain driving hazards associated with a rigid vehicle and describe measures to reduce the risks associated with the identified hazards.
  • Describe the requirements relating to safe loading of a rigid vehicle and driving techniques that minimize the adverse effects of a high centre of gravity.

Following day - Practical Training AND Assessment Session:
  • Carry out a pre-use walk-around inspection of a rigid vehicle.
  • Drive a rigid vehicle efficiently in different traffic and road conditions.
  • Manoeuvre a rigid vehicle in reverse.
  • Park, shut down, and secure a rigid vehicle.
  • And complete driver logbook entries.
  • In-Classroom Theory Course Closed Book Assessment & In-Vehicle Practical Training and Assessment.

Unit Standard 17576 (Level 3, Credits 7) - Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 4 driver licence.       

Price is $980 plus GST.

WorkTime  and log book Course Unit Standard 24089

Upon successful completion of all learning outcomes, including both the theory and practical components of the course, you will be issued an NZTA driver licensing certificate for a Class 4 Full Licence. You will need to present this certificate to your nearest NZTA-approved driver licensing agency (such as AA or VTNZ) to upgrade your licence to a Full Class 4 Licence, with no further tests required.Once you have received your Class 4 Full Licence, you are permitted to operate Class 4 heavy rigid vehicles independently. All unit standards completed during this course will be credited to your NZQA Record of Learning within 90 days of the assessment date.
