Class 2 Heavy Truck Licence

A Class 2 licence in New Zealand allows drivers to legally operate medium rigid vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 6,000 kg and up to 18,000 kg. This licence is ideal for drivers looking to build a career in transport, logistics, construction, and commercial delivery services.

It is often the next step after a Class 1 licence, helping drivers gain experience with larger vehicles and increased responsibility. A Class 2 licence opens up more job opportunities, improved earning potential, and a clear pathway toward advanced heavy vehicle licences such as Class 4 and Class 5.

The purpose of this course is to help candidates obtain their Class 2 Full Truck Licence, enabling them to legally drive medium rigid vehicles with a Gross Laden Weight (GLW) over 6,000kg and up to 18,000kg.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical, on-road training, this course prepares learners to meet the competency requirements set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA),

ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a Class 2 vehicle safely and confidently.

Day 1 - Unit Standard 24089 - Demonstrate knowledge of fatigue management, worktime, and logbook requirements.

  • Identify causes and symptoms of fatigue, and effects of fatigue on driving performance.
  • Describe life management skills and work-related measures that can be implemented to prevent fatigue.
  • Identify the work time requirements and penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Identify driver logbook requirements and associated penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Describe the management of work time records contained in driver logbooks, and identify associated penalties prescribed by legislation.
  • Complete and present driver logbook entries.

Day 2 - Unit Standard 17574 - Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 2 driver license

  • Identify and explain driving hazards associated with a rigid vehicle and describe measures to reduce the risks associated with the identified hazards.
  • Describe the requirements relating to safe loading of a rigid vehicle and driving techniques that minimize the adverse effects of a high centre of gravity.

Practical Training AND Practical Assessment

  • Carry out a pre-use walk-around inspection of a rigid vehicle.
  • Drive a rigid vehicle efficiently in different traffic and road conditions.
  • Manoeuvre a rigid vehicle in reverse.
  • Park, shut down, and secure a rigid vehicle.
  • And complete driver logbook entries.

Classroom Theory Course Closed Book Assessment & In-Vehicle Practical Training and Assessment

Unit Standard 24089 (Level 3, Credits 5) - Demonstrate Knowledge of fatigue management, worktime and logbook requirements   

Unit Standard 17574 (Level 3, Credits 7) - Operate a rigid vehicle to meet the requirements for a full class 2 driver licence                 

1350 includes Gst

upon successful completion of all learning outcomes of the theory and practical parts of the course you will be issued with a NZTA driver licencing certificate for Class 2 Full License.

You will need to take this to your nearest NZTA approved driver license agency (AA or VTNZ) to have your license upgraded to a Full Class 2 Licence with no further tests required.

Once you have received your Class 2 Full license temporary license you are able to operate class 2 heavy rigid vehicles unsupervised

Unit standards 24089 & 17574 will be credited to your NZQA Records of learning within 90 days of the assessment date.

Overseas Licence Conversion Course

The purpose of this course is to help candidates obtain their Class 2 Full Truck Licence, enabling them to legally drive medium rigid vehicles with a Gross Laden Weight (GLW) over 6,000kg and up to 18,000kg.

Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical, on-road training, this course prepares learners to meet the competency requirements set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA),

ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a Class 2 vehicle safely and confidently.

Two(2) full theory days (8 hours a day) and 3 practical drive sessions (each practical session is 1.5 hours in duration) booked on separate days unless otherwise specified.
