What Can You Drive on a Class 1 (Car) Licence?

Cars, vans, and utes with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) under 6,000kg
All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)

Mopeds or scooters up to 2kW

When Can I Start Car Driving Lessons?

You can begin car driving lessons at any time that suits your schedule, as long as you hold at least a Learner Licence.

What Do I Need to Start?

To take Class 1 driving lessons on New Zealand roads, you must hold at least a Learner Licence.

Graduated Driver Licence System (GDLS)

1️⃣ Learner Licence

Minimum age: 16 years

2️⃣ Restricted Licence

Must hold Learner Licence for at least 6 months before applying

3️⃣ Full Licence

Under 25 years old:
- Hold Restricted Licence for 18 months
- Can reduce to 12 months by completing a Street Talk Course after 6 months
25 years and over:
- Hold Restricted Licence for 6 months
- Can reduce to 3 months with a Street Talk Course

The Street Talk Course can be completed as soon as you receive your Restricted Licence
